February 20th - Ride to Chalmette, LA. This being the first decent day for riding this year, we were all a little excited to be out. And of course it could not go without a hitch. A couple of us found dead batteries when trying to start out this morning. But all is well, batteries were revived and spirits were rejuvenated.
With blue skies and 55 degree temps the open roads were ours for the taking. The day began with most of the girls meeting at Cowan Road in Gulfport and from there riding Highway 90 through Pass Christian to pick up one more then on into Slidell where we met three others. I think we even passed a couple Dixie Angels (Diane & Kristie) on their way to Biloxi with the LA Hog group.
After making it to Slidell we noticed a little leakage from Theresa’s bike and detoured to Mike Bruno’s to have it checked out. Fortunately, it was minor and according to the service department, something that is very typical after the winter months of storage. The LA Hog members were having a big party at Mike Bruno’s so we listened so some great music while we waited, then gathered back up to continue our ride into Chalmette.
Thank you Rhonda for introducing us to one of the best Italian food dives ever. The food at Rocky & Carlo’s was awesome and abundant. They treated us well by combining tables so we could sit together an enjoy laughter and bonding as only the Dixie Angels do best!
Our ride back brought a little sadness when we saw the result of a motorcycle accident. Fortunately, the rider was standing when we passed and he appeared to be fairly unharmed. This looked to be the result of someone in a cage not paying attention while turning left across traffic.
Once we got on the interstate heading back towards Slidell, four of us went back to Mike Bruno’s so I could get my 10,000 mile service done. (Pitiful I know, I’ve had the bike 11 months and only have 10,000 miles on it.) While waiting for the work to be done I enjoyed riding behind Helen on her trike. We made a visit to Jandy’s Imports to do some shopping while Rhonda was busy recruiting a potential member and taking her out on a test ride.
This turned out to be a great day riding with the Angels. Thanks to all the Ladies who made it out.

January 17-18, 2009: RIDE Intermediate Class - Pam and Rhonda recently took the RIDE (Riders Institute for Defensive Education) motorcycle school intermediate class in Gulfport, MS. They took it in conjunction with the beginner’s class that was offered on the adjoining course. "We were able to enhance some skills and learn a few new ones. We spent much of the time concentrating on slow speed maneuvers to learn better control of a motorcycle. We learned some safe braking procedures that were new to me. This is a super program and I encourage anyone to regularly brush up on their skills." -- Pam
January 8, 2009: Motorcycle Awareness Champaign and WLOX - The Dixie Angels were part of a gathering of 95 riders (81 bikes counted) to bring to light the need for motorcycle awareness on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. Leaders of various riding groups were interviewed by reporter AJ Giardina, who will be using the material to put together a one or two part series report. We await the air date/time and online link.
December 19, 2008: Holiday Season Party - The Dixie Angels gathered at Beef O’ Brady’s in Gulfport, MS to greet each other with holiday cheer! Small gifts were exchanged in a rousing round of Dirty Santa. What a great end to 2008!
November 1, 2007: Opening of the Biloxi Bay Bridge - Destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the Biloxi Bay Bridge in Mississippi connects Biloxi with Ocean Springs, a vital connection on the coastline. On this day, two lanes of six (final completion in April 2008) were opened and swarms of motorcyclists from the coastal areas gathered to cross as a united group, including a number of Dixie Angels!
